A striking seventeenth century engraving depicting Margat, or Marqab, castle in Syria. The castle was a Crusader fortress, and one of the major strongholds of the Knights Hospitaller. The work was engraved by Henry Raignauld, and was published in Jean Baudoin's 'Histoire des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de Saint jean de Jérusalem'. The coat of arms of Alexandre de Vendôme (Grand Prior of the Order) sits to the upper right, while ships line the left-hand side. The work is well presented in a black frame with gold details. On paper.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discoloration, creasing, and light foxing to the paper. Restoration to the upper right corner. Light wear to the frame. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age.
