Description

After Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) Original Late 19th Century Oil. A superb copy of Rosa Bonheur's 1853 painting 'The Horse Fair', which is now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The painting shows the horse market held in Paris on the Boulevard de l’Hôpital, near the asylum of Salpêtrière, which is visible in the left background. This is one of Bonheur's best known paintings. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers. Condition is typical for a painting of this age, with some light stretcher bar marks visible and some restoration showing under UV light, including three old repaired tears (only visible from the reverse). All restoration has been done extremely well and is very well matched to the original paint work. Craquelure lines are visible but they have been well restored and the paint layer is stable and sound.
