A very fine 19th Century copy of Raphael's 'Madonna della seggiola' in oil on canvas. The artist has retained minute details and a vivid sense of figurative depth. Raphael's choice to forgo his linear style and strict geometric form is still clear in this handsome rendering. Mary embraces the child Christ in a loving manner, while a young St John the Baptist watches on in piety. The original is housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence, Italy.
Well-presented in a circular gilt mount and gilt wooden frane, as shown.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition overall, especially for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. There are some surface marks to the frame, and some light cracking. There is an area of restoration to the upper edge of the frame.
