A delightful 19th-century copy of Raphael's c.1514 'Madonna della Seggiola' in oil. Raphael's choice to forgo his linear style and strict geometric form is still clear in this handsome rendering. Mary embraces the child Christ in a loving manner, while a young St John the Baptist watches on in piety. The original is housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence, Italy. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a substantial frame with a gilt inner edge. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Fine craquelure throughout. Notable abrasions to the lower margin. The artwork has been previously restored and canvas has been relined. Overall, the artwork is vivid and in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations throughout.
