18th Century Oil - The Military Man's Wife
Description
This delightful 18th-century portrait depicts the wife of an Austrian military man. She wears her hair in a typical Georgian up-do topped by a lace cap adorned with blue floral embroidery. Her attire consists of a pale blue satin gown with a square neckline, delicately trimmed with white lace. Unsigned. Listed alongside a companion piece (SX279). Beautifully presented in a swept gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Craquelure, abrasions and staining throughout. Discolouration to the varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of restoration. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and stable cracking. There is a loss to the upper-left ornament. Historic woodworm damage to the reverse of the frame; however, this has been fully treated and the wood is pest-free. Overall, the frame is in good condition for its age.
