Description
A dynamic genre scene by German artist Adolf Hohenstein (1854–1928) depicting a busy produce market. A vendor stands to the right, reaching into a metal pail, whilst a cluster of older women in dark caps and clothing crowd around the goods laid out in baskets, with fruits and vegetables piled on sacking and straw. The mood is everyday and observational—women shopping, inspecting, and haggling over food—a scene that was hugely popular in late-19th and early-20th-century genre painting. Housed in an ornate gilt-effect frame with decorative running patterns, the work is signed to the lower left. On canvas.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Minor surface marks and abrasions to the perimeter of the composition. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The frame has light surface wear and scuffs. Small chips and indentations on all sides. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
