A delightful 18th-century religious piece depicting Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ child. While staying with a nobleman, Anthony was seen through a window or door late at night in his room, his face radiant, cradling an infant — the Christ Child himself. The onlooker kept the vision secret until after Anthony's death. This story became the basis for centuries of devotional art. Unsigned. Well presented in a decorative gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Craquelure and abrasions throughout. Some discolouration to the surface. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including relining and overpainting. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations.
