An impressive oil painting by well listed artist William Ongley (1836-1890). Here the artist has depicted a wonderfully detailed river landscape, completed in dusky summer shades with detailed brushwork. This decorative, romantic landscape is typical of the period with expressive touches and a lifelike richness.
Ongley was a particularly dedicated and excellent landscape painter, enjoying a successful career in the United States. His pictures were frequently exhibited by the American Art Association.
Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There has been some restoration work to the upper edge. Two small holes have been repaired and an area of overpainting is visible under UV light to this area. Minor surface marks to the edges of the canvas. Overall in good condition.

William Ongley was born in England in 1836. He moved to America when he was a young child, and remained there for the rest of his life. Omgley moved to New York where he worked for a time with artist Whiteridge. In 1871 he married Mary Potter and for a number of years he traveled through the Eastern States painting pictures and selling them. Onglety died in 1890.
