William Moore (1817-1909) - 1861 Watercolour Loch Eil, Scotland

Description

A fine 19th watercolour study by the British artist William Moore (1817-1909). The artist has captured a tranquil  Scottish loch with distant snow topped mountains and crystal clear waters. A stone structure is depicted in the middle of the composition. Indistinctly signed to the lower left. Inscribed on the reverse by a later hand. On watercolour paper laid to board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. There are various small marks to the substrate, most noticeably to the centre of the composition. With mount burn to the outer edges of the paper.

Artist Biography

William Moore was a painter, born in Birmingham into an artistic family. His father also William Moore (1790-1851) was a portrait painter and taught his son. He was the father of 14 children from two marriages 13 of whom were male and several were practicing artists. These included Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893), Henry Moore, (1831-1895), Edwin Moore, (1813-1893), John Collingham Moore, (1829-1880) and wood carver Frederick Collingham Moore, (b.1833). William Jnr as a young man published many lithographs but later turned to watercolours. He was mainly a landscape artist depicting views of Yorkshire and the Lake District. He exhibited at the Dudley Gallery Art Society, Walker Art Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. York City Art Gallery hold several of his works.
