William James Boddy (1832-1911) - 1890 Watercolour Bridge Near Portinscale
Description
Close to the western shore of Derwentwater, this delightful watercolour depicts a village bridge from Portinscale. Framed in one of the stone arches, watering cattle have there heads raised to two fishing enthusiasts standing on the bridge. In the distance Cumbrian hills soar into the clouds, bring drama to this Lake district landscape. The artist has signed, dated and inscribed the scene to the lower right, and the watercolour has been well-presented in a new card mount and complimenting gilt frame. On paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour. The gilt frame shows signs of wear with stable cracking on all members and a loss in the lower left corner.

Artist Biography
William James Boddy 1832-1911. The son of an architect, he followed the same profession for a while, moving to York in 1853 as assistant to George Jones. However, he soon buildup a flourishing practice as a drawing master and exhibited in York and London from 1865 to 1879. A folio of his work was presented to the Prince of Wales in 1900. For the last 25 years of his life he lived at Acomb, Yorkshire and he gave up teaching in 1908. His landscapes are taken from many parts of Great Britain as well as Switzerland and Normandy.
