A whimsical watercolour by the well listed artist William Marshall Craig (c.1750-1828). A gentleman, clad in a silver tailcoat and top hat, hastens across a stream and past crumbling ruins with his loyal steeds. Rendered with a confident hand and fine brushwork. Unsigned. Provenance verso. Well presented behind glass in a gilt frame with a wash-line mount. On paper.Condition
Very light foxing and discolouration to the paper. Small tears to the edges. Some wear to the frame, including small chips throughout. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age.

Artist Biography
William Marshall Craig (1765-1827) was a British painter, miniature artist, and drawing master active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1788 until 1827. Craig served as painter in watercolours to Queen Charlotte and as miniature painter to the Duke and Duchess of York, and he also acted as drawing master to Princess Charlotte of Wales. He was known for his watercolours, miniature portraits, and book illustrations, and he published instructional works on drawing and painting, including Lectures on Drawing, Painting, and Engraving. One of his notable pupils was the mouth-painter Sarah Biffen. His works are held in collections such as the National Portrait Gallery, London and the British Museum.
