Early 19th Century Watercolour - Gathering Kindling
Description
A wonderful 19th century watercolour depicting a family collecting kindling for their fire in the depths of winter. Painted en-grisaille, this naive study is full of character and charm with delightful details. The male figure stands to the left of the composition and smokes of his clay pipe as he holds a large stack of firewood. His wife, or possibly a daughter is dressed in a red cloak, synonymous with the early 19th century and a young child stands looking out at the viewer. Touches of white gouache have been used to highlight the snowy landscape and smoke coming from the cottage chimney and the clay pipe. Well presented in a vintage gilt effect frame. Unsigned.
On canvas laid to paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor spots of foxing. There are creases and closed tears to the paper. The frame is in a vintage condition with marks and scuffs.
