Artist Biography

Arthur McArthur (1827–1892) was a painter who was born in France to British parents. The census in 1941 to 1961 shows that he moved to England and was working as a lithographic artist in Bradford. He was particularly renowned for his watercolour street scenes of Bradford, capturing the city’s cobbled roads and quaint buildings. As Bradford was going through a time of industrialisation and extreme change, his paintings are important records of the old city and its buildings. He married his wife Eleanor Smith, a fellow watercolour artist in 1967, and together they had four children. As well as street scenes of Bradford, McArthur also captured seascapes and worked on commission pieces. His commission to paint Cliffe Castle now resides in the Cliffe Castle Museum and Gallery at Keighley.
