A very fine landscape scene by the British artist William Langley (1880-1922). Here the artist has depicted a tranquil summer landscape with distant cottage and rowing boat. A commercially successful artist, Langley is well known for his romanticised depictions of the British Isles. The textural application of paint and subtle areas of impasto creates compositional tension adding a depth to the landscape. Completed in expressive brushstrokes and an organic, natural colour palette. Well presented in a gilt effect frame. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration and areas of craqueleure. Scuffs and marks to the frame, with smaller losses to the gilt paint. Inspection under UV light reveals no sign of restoration.
