A fine and accomplished watercolour painting by the artist William Edward Croxford. Known for his marine landscapes, this work was painted in the artist's usual style, depicting a seascape at the Bishop's Rock, Newquay. Signed and dated to the lower left-hand corner. Location is inscribed to the opposite lower corner. On thin card.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, minor surface marks and light foxing.

Artist Biography

William Edward Croxford is sometimes also listed as William Edwards Croxford. He was popular for his fine marine and landscape works. He was born in Brentford, Essex and spent the early part of his life living and painting in St Leonards on Sea and for a short time in Hastings.
In 1892 he moved to Cornwall where he spent thirty four years of his life working from his studio in Newquay. His works are generally associated with the Newlyn School of artists. His paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute and the Walker Gallery Liverpool. A retrospective exhibition of his painting was held in Hayle, Cornwall in 1992.
