'Solitude,' an etching by William Woollett (1735-1785) and William Ellis (1747-1810) after a painting by Richard Wilson (1714-1782). Wilson's original is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Wilson was deeply inspired by the Arcadian landscapes he encountered whilst travelling in Italy. This influence is evident in this work, where two monks rest beside a shady pool. Their church appears almost to glow between the dark tree trunks in the distance, whilst a broken statue of a lion stands to one side, symbolising the inevitability of death and decay. In Wilson's original, another figure lies beside the statue, though Woollett and Ellis chose to omit this detail. An excerpt from a poem by James Thomson is inscribed below the image, alongside a dedication to Sir George Beaumont, 7th Baronet. Smartly presented in a black frame. On paper.
Condition
Some discolouration and light foxing to the paper, however, the condition is good for a picture of this age overall. Scratches and scuffs to the frame.
