Artist Biography
Tom Coates (1941-2023) studied at the Bournville College of Art, Birmingham College of Art, and Royal Academy Schools. He won several prizes and scholarships during his studies and exhibited widely thereafter. He was elected past president of the Royal Society of British Artists as well as being a member of the New English Art Club, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and Royal Watercolour Society. Coates carried out a series of prestigious commissions, including one for the Royal Watercolour Society in 1990 to paint the ceremonial procession celebrating The Queen Mother’s ninetieth birthday. In 2000 he was commissioned as the artist for the England cricket team touring South Africa. Coates' library of sketchbooks acted as a constant point of reference and he always drew from life, never using photographs.
