Stuart Ray (1916-1985) - 1962 Oil Smithfield Meat Market
Description
An original oil painting by British artist Stuart Ray (1916-1985) depicts Smithfield
Meat Market in 1962. The Central Market which still stands today was built in the 1860s by the Corporation of London and designed by the City architect Sir Horace Jones. The market cost £200,000 to build and was designed to feed 3,000,000 people. This impressionistic scene shows several of the market's butchers in their white butchers coats, inspecting the hanging carcasses before opening. The painting is signed and dated to the lower left-hand corner.
Condition
The overall condition of the painting is very good. Inspection under UV light reveals a small amount of restoration to the canvas. A patch repair is visible to the reverse and there has been some minor overpainting to the front.
