A characterful portrait of an elderly woman taking snuff, after an engraving by the French painter and draughtsman Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845) titled 'The Contrast'. In Boilly's original, portraits of an attractive upper-class woman and an elderly peasant woman taking snuff are presented side by side. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Restorative work, including two canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure. Wear and small losses to the paint around the edges of the canvas. Scuffs and losses to the frame. Parts of the running patterns have been remoulded and repainted.
