Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this fine late 19th century oil by the eminent American artist Strafford Newmarch.
Known for his depictions of rural life, seascapes and picturesque genre scenes, this very fine street scene is in-keeping with the artist's known subject matter. Newmarch has depicted a young girl and her mother conversing with a gentleman in the doorway of his cottage, while a resting donkey drinks from a wooden sink. This wonderful composition can be considered an idyllic, romantic view of rural life at the time. This scene possibly captures an area close to the outskirts of New York or Brooklyn, as Newmarch was known to use these areas as inspiration for his work.
Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleure. Inspection under UV light reveals only one significant area of overpainting to the sky, just to the left of the tiled roofs. However this is very minimal, and was possibly done to correct a small area of paint loss. With small marks to the corners and edges of the canvas. Overall the condition is good.

Unfortunately little is known of Stafford Newmarch's personal life, information is primarily derived from an analysis of his paintings and records from New York art associations and exhibitions. The National Academy of Design records states that the Newmarch resided in Brooklyn and exhibited his paintings in and around New York. He was renowned for his accomplished style and ability to paint the human figure within comfortable views of rural life. Newmarch was active between 1861 and 1895.
