In very good condition overall, with remarkable colours for a picture of this age. There is some light surface marks to the corners, and very small creases. There is a 1cm tear to the centre of the right edge.

Sophia Stansbury was an early 19th Century watercolourist with a remarkably dynamic approach to form and palette, far ahead of the prevalent styles of the period.
Her highly illustrative naive style, and almost theatrical settings have retained almost all of their colour, owing to exemplary storage conditions for the last two centuries. Her work includes classical studies, portrait scenes, and English landscapes.
