Sir James Dromgole Linton (1840-1916) specialised in detailed historical and literary genre scenes in watercolour, which this work is a fine example of. Monogrammed to the lower left and inscribed on the mount below the image. Well presented in a swept gilt frame with elegant floral ornamentation. On paper.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good for a picture of this age. Slight discolouration to the paper. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some cracking to the swept rail. Parts of the frame have been restored.

Artist Biography

Sir James Dromgole Linton (1840-1916) was a painter in oils and watercolour. He was born in London and educated at Clevedon House, and studied art at Leigh's Academy, which was later to become Heatherley's. During the early part of his career, he worked as a black and white illustrator, his work being published in The Graphic. He was a member of the Art Workers' Guild and exhibited widely at venues which included the Dudley Gallery, London and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He was elected a member of the latter in 1870, and acted as the society’s President from 1884-98 and again from 1909 until his death. He was also an early member of the London Sketch Club, and a founding member of the Chelsea Art Society in 1910. Linton was knighted for his contribution to art in 1885. Examples of his work are in Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield, and the art galleries of Auckland, New Zealand and Perth, Australia.
