A lively historical tableau by the Victorian painter Charles Cattermole (1832-1900). As was popular at this time, Cattermole's work captures a romantic, idealised vision of history. Here, soldiers lounge by the street with jugs and goblets of wine. Cattermole renders the scene with fine detail and vibrant colour, imbuing each figure with individual character through their stances and expressions. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in a gilt frame with floral corner ornamentation. On paper.

Condition

The condition is good for a picture of this age. Some slight discolouration and foxing to the paper. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some areas of restoration to the ornamentation.

Artist Biography

Charles Cattermole (1832-1900) was an English painter and nephew of the artist George Cattermole (1800-1868). He exhibited at the Society of British Artists, the British Institution, the Royal Academy, and the Society of Painters in Water Colours, of which he became an associate in 1863 and a full member in 1870. Like his uncle, Cattermole's paintings reimagined the Britain of the past, from monastic life in the Middle Ages to armour-clad civil war soldiers.
