Description

A delightful watercolour scene depicting a busy corner of Genoa Harbour on a sunny day. The large sails of the ships cast shadows over the scene, covering the men moving barrels and the small crowd that has gathered beneath an archway. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some light scuffing to the frame.

Artist Biography

Rev. Sir Hubert James Medlycott was a painter of landscape and seascapes. He was born in Milborne Port, near Sherborne in Somerset and was the 6th Baronet as well as a clerk in holy orders. The Medlycott Baronetcy, of Ven House in the County of Somerset, was created in 1808 for William Medlycott, Member of Parliament for Milborne Port from 1790 to 1791. The baronetcy became extinct with the death of the 9th Baronet in 2021.

As an artist, Sir Hubert James Medlycott exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery Art Society, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and Walker's Gallery. He died at home in central London close to Buckingham Palace.
