Description

Several cavaliers in elaborate period dress gather around a table within a grand manor interior in this richly detailed watercolour by Samuel A. Rayner (1806-1879). Natural light streams through a large window, illuminating the space and reflecting upon a heaped pile of golden armour, shields and weaponry. Monogrammed and dated to the lower right. On paper laid to board.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration. Scuffs and scratches to the surface, most notably near the centre. Tear up the right-hand side, which has been repaired, as well as several smaller tears. Warping to the page so that there is a raised ridge in the centre.

Artist Biography

Samuel A. Rayner (1806-1879) was an English artist, known for his paintings of buildings and their interiors, including abbeys, churches and mansions. He trained as a draughtsman, and by the age of fifteen his picture of Malmsbury Abbey was accepted by the Royal Academy. In 1823 he eloped with Anne Manser, who was also an artist. Rayner was a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours until he was expelled after being charged with fraud.
