Description

A remarkable self-portrait by German painter Robert Julius Beyschlag (1838-1903). Best known for his mythological and genre scenes, Beyschlag brings the same sense of realism and dramatic intensity to this work. Set against a dark background, bold chiaroscuro lighting illuminates his face. The work is unsigned, but was acquired from the artist's estate. Well presented in a dark frame with a scalloped gilt slip that enhances the painting's luminous highlights. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Some slight discolouration, as is typical for a picture of this age. Several faint scratches and marks. Areas of bitumen deterioration and overpainting. Scratches and scuffing to the frame, as well as a crack to the upper edge. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good for a picture of this age and the piece presents well.

Artist Biography

German artist Robert Julius Beyschlag (1838-1903) was born in Nördlingen and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was predominantly a painter of mythological and genre scenes. He also painted a fresco in the Bavarian National Museum.
