Description

This striking mid-19th-century portrait depicts a refined lady dressed in black silk and lace, accented by a pale blue bonnet resting atop her neatly parted hair and tied delicately beneath her chin. She wears a gold crucifix on a chain, a subtle indication of her piety. Seated in a poised, upright posture, she exudes restrained elegance as she holds her needlework, drawing attention to the fine detail of her rings. The artist renders the sitter with careful brushwork and close attention to texture and expression, capturing both the richness of her attire and the quiet dignity of her presence. Signed indistinctly and dated to the lower right. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Light discolouration to the varnish. Craquelure and abrasions throughout. Some flaking to the paint layer, however this is stable. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including overpainting, notably to the background. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips, stable cracking and staining.
