Herbert Ralph Herring was born at Sea Point, Cape Colony (now South Africa). He was the son of Herbert Herring, an accountant and municipal clerk to Green Point and Sea Point, Cape Colony, and his wife Constance Mary née Alexander . In 1911, Herbert Ralph was 6-year-old, living at 18 Kemball Street, Ipswich with his 42-year-old widowed mother Constance.
Herring was educated at Ipswich School and at Oriel College, Oxford. His mother had studied at Ipswich Art School and fostered his interest in landscape painting. Since retiring from the Colonial Forestry Service in East Africa, Herring made landscape painting in oil his principal occupation. His paintings have been exhibited at several venues in London and the provinces and he held an annual exhibition at his home in Culpho, near Ipswich.
A member and exhibitor from Ipswich at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1964 and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1969 and exhibited from Little Thatch, Culpho, Ipswich in 1966, two oil paintings 'Wraithes' and 'Long Plantation, Suffolk', the following year an oil 'Autumn Beech, Butley' and at the centenary of Ipswich Art Club in 1974, an oil 'Farm Bridge, Iken Marshes' and in 1979 again from 'Little Thatch', Culpho, Ipswich three pictures 'Box Valley', 'Stour' and 'Pines in Breckland'. Herbert Ralph Herring died at Little Thatch, Culpho, Ipswich on 9 August 1979.
