Description

A striking Dutch landscape from the early 20th Century in thinned oil on paper. The scene shows a traditional Dutch church and village under a dispersing storm cloud. The painting has wonderful atmosphere and a sense of poignancy and hope. The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting has been substantially presented in a 20th Century silver frame with white slip. The artist has signed, inscribed in Dutch and dated to the reverse. There is also a postcard attached at the reverse with a note written in Dutch. On wove.

Condition

The painting is in fine condition. The frame has some scuffing and surface dirt.

Artist Biography

Arthur Deleu was a Belgian artist who was born in Kortrijk in 1884 and died there in 1966. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolourist, interior designer and furniture designer. Was married to Magdalena De Coene and thus had constant contact with his brother-in-law, Jozef (Joseph) De Coene. Worked as a designer for his furniture and decoration company. Painted landscapes from the Lys and Scheldt regions, blooming orchards, ripe cornfields, farm views, but also industrial corners, the harbor side of Dunkirk, panoramas of dunes and seaside resorts in the Westende area, portraits. Debuted pointillistically, drawing with Chinese ink. Later he achieved remarkable effects by using charcoal and watercolor or gouache together on canvas, even mixing them. Mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists II, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.
