There is significant creasing to the paper with multiple creases running through the centre of the piece. There is also some wear to the frame.

Phelan Gibb was a painter of figures, abstracts and pottery decorator born in Alnwick, Northumberland, Henry William Gibb. First taught by his father, Thomas Henry Gibb, (1833-1895) he later studied at Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited at the RA, RHA, RSA, RSW, GI, Wertheim Gallery, Alpine Gallery, Redfern Gallery and at the Baillie Gallery where he held his first solo exhibition in 1911. He lived at Milngavie and later at Killin, Perthshire and was a friend of Matisse, Braque and Gertrude Stein in pre-1914 Paris, where he held a solo exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in 1913. His work is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, V&A and in Auckland, New Zealand. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Alwin Gallery, London in 1961. His sister is alleged to have been the artist Sadie Gibb although this is unsubstantiated by any records I could find.
