Description

An extremely fine autumnal example of the masterly study and depiction of trees by the artist Oliver Hall RA RE RWS (1869-1957). An impressive study of the effects of sunshine and shadow on a lane at Bandsea Forest, Cumbria, England. The painting is well-presented in a substantial painted wood and composition frame with textured mouldings, likely to be the original frame. With the artist's handwritten label to the reverse reading 'For R.A. Early Spring, Bardsea Forest. By Oliver Hall R.A.'. Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There are some small paint losses to the surface, which have been previously restored. These are mainly to the lower left. Minor wear and some stable cracking to the frame.

Artist Biography

Oliver Hall RA, RE, RWS (1869–1957) was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour and an etcher with a preference for rugged moorland and Spanish subjects. Hall studied at the R.C.A. from 1887–90, then attended Westminster and Lambeth Schools of Art evening classes alongside private art tuition with D.A. Williamson of Liverpool, working at Broughton-in-Furness. He travelled extensively in Spain, France and Italy. Hall began exhibiting etchings at the R.A. in 1890 and was a member of the R.W.S. He lived at Pulborough, Sussex, and later at Ulverston, Lancashire, where he died on the 5th December 1957. His son paints under the name of Claude Muncaster. Elected A.R.A: 23 Apr 1920. Elected R.A: 24 Feb 1927. Elected Senior R.A: 01 Jan 1937.

His work can be found at the Royal Academy, Tate Galleries, the Laing Art Gallery, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery and Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.
