Norman Hirst After Gainsborough - 1912 Mezzotint Miss Linley And Her Brother
Description
A fine early 20th Century mezzotint made by Norman Hirst after a painting by Thomas Gainsborough, who painted these siblings (Thomas and Elizabeth Linley) more than once over the years. The original painting is part of the American collection of the Clark Institute of Art, in Massachusetts. The publisher's details have been inscribed in plate and the artist has signed in graphite to the lower right of the plate line. There is a blind stamp to the lower left corner. The mezzotint has been presented in a fine early 20th Century Hogarth frame with card mount and internal gilt slip. There is a framer's label at the reverse and a second label with information about the mezzotint. On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including heavy discolouration and foxing.

Collection Information
Thomas Linley (1756–1778) was one of the most precocious composers and performers of England, having become known as the ‘English Mozart’. Linley and Mozart were contemporaries and were exactly the same age, which contributed to the beginning of a friendship between the two when they were teenagers. Linley tragically lost his life at just 22 years old in a boating accident. His death was recognised as a great loss for English music.
