Neil Stuart Crichton was a painter of mainly topographical and architectural scenes born in Bradford the son of a travelling salesman who specialised in wines and spirits. After leaving school, he trained as a lithographic draughtsman which was his first paid occupation. He travelled through Britain and in mainland Europe and from the 1870's began to exhibit mainly watercolours showing at the Royal Society of British Artists.
