A very fine 19th century watercolour by well listed artist Samuel Gillespie Prout (1822-1911). Depicting a busy market day scene in Antwerp. Well presented in a modern gilt effect frame. Inscribed on the reverse 'Antwerp'. Signed with monogram. On wove.

Condition

Some foxing as shown in photos. Otherwise in very fine condition.

Artist Biography

Samuel Gillespie Prout (1822-1911) was the youngest son of artist Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852). Samuel Gillespie Prout intended to follow the family profession of artist and his style was heavily influenced by his father's work. Prout made a tour of France in 1846 and made many attempts to earn a living as a private tutor and drawing teacher. In his later life he focused more on charitable work, until his death in 1911.
