A study of classical ruins, likely Roman, with figures gathered and moving amongst the broken architecture. The scene is set in Rome, the crumbling columns and masonry given scale by the small figures who wander through them, lending the composition a sense of everyday life continuing amidst the antique remains.
Ruin studies of this kind belong to a long European tradition of drawing and painting the classical past, and the addition of bodycolour gives the work greater depth and substance than a straightforward drawing.
An atmospheric antique study that would sit well amongst other architectural or Grand Tour subjects.
