A finely painted Victorian portrait from the mid 19th Century. The portrait is of a beautiful dark haired young woman in a luxurious gown, gazing flirtatiously over her shoulder. Her hair and dress date this portrait circa 1850. The portrait is in oil which is unusual for a miniature from this era, yet the artist has mastered the medium at this size perfectly, with smooth delicate brush work and subtlety in the face and skin tones. The painting is unsigned and presented in an early 20th Century black lacquer frame with oval inner window and domed glass, completed with a floral brass hanger. On board.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a small loss to the paint in the woman's back and the portrait is slightly smaller than the frame's inner window. The frame has an area of retouching to the right of the inner window.
