paint, born in Stoke Newington, London, the son of William Squires Codner and iron merchant. Codner was educated at the Stationers' Company School at Hornsey, north London. It is possible he may have had art tuition at nearby Hornsey School of Art but no confirmation is as yet possible. During the World War I Codner served in France in the Royal Devon Hussars. His parents owned property at Dedham, Essex, where in 1919 he was befriended by Alfred Munnings while out hunting. At some point, Codner attended the Colchester School of Art but is recorded by Munnings as working as a part-time assistant curator at the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood, London, in the late 1920's.
He is best known as a portrait paint of various civic dignitaries. His sitters included Field Marshal Lord Alexander of Tunis, Lloyd-George, HRH George VI and HRH Queen Elizabeth II. His 'celebrity' portraits included George Robey, Evelyn Laye, Leslie Henson, Kathleen Ferrier and his friend Alfred Munnings. Many were shown regularly at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
