Description

A woman hangs out her washing on a line beside a cluster of humble cottages in this charming countryside view by Mary Duncan (1885–1964). Although the location is unidentified, it seems likely that this is a Cornish village, as Duncan was living in Cornwall at this time and regularly painted local scenery, villages, and everyday life. The work is signed and dated to the lower right, and is well presented in a distressed frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The frame has a deliberately distressed finish with scuffs and losses to the paint.

Size

34.5 x 44.5cm (13.6" x 17.5")
Framed Size: 45.5 x 55.5cm (17.9" x 21.9")
