Medvecka's expressive, overlapping lines and rich tones of brown, burgundy and amber, create depth and movement, evoking a sense of energy. Medvecka was known for documenting the people of her home town Orava, Slovakia. Signed and dated verso. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Abrasions and fine craquelure to the surface. The canvas has been re-stretched and there is some fraying to the edges of the canvas. The artwork has undergone restoration, including a small tear repair to the canvas.

Artist Biography
Mária Medvecká (1914–1987) was a key figure in Slovak Realist-Impressionism. After graduating from high school, she studied at the Pedagogical Academy in Bratislava. She worked as a teacher in Zubrohlava, Tvrdošín, Jablonka, and Námestov. After the war, she continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then Prague. She was known for documenting her home town of Orava and its inhabitants. In 1974, she was awarded the title of National Artist.
