An impressive portrait of a gentleman, depicted seated in three-quarter-length pose, dressed in formal black attire with a white cravat. His hands rest upon a leather-bound Bible, representing his faith. The sitter is identified as Mr John Johnson, an early proprietor of the Manchester wire company that would become Richard Johnson and Nephew Ltd. The company revolutionised the wire industry with the introduction of the first continuous galvanising plant and later with the world's first successful continuous rod rolling mill. Their wire was used for the Niagara Suspension Bridge, the first transatlantic telegraph cable, and in conductors for the National Grid. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
