Description
An accomplished early 19th century Biedermeier portrait of a refined lady with a direct and confident gaze. She wears a lace bonnet trimmed with blue silk ribbons and a matching lace shawl, which she lightly holds in one hand. The gesture draws attention to the gold wedding band on her finger, a subtle indication of her married status and wealth. The sitter is placed before an idealised landscape of low mountains and a river, painted in the classical style commonly found in portraiture of the period. Signed indistinctly and dated to the lower left. Beautifully presented in a decorative gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Craquelure throughout. Wear to the perimeter of the canvas. Very small areas of overpainting visible under UV light. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations.
