Leon Jean Basile Perrault was born in Paris, France in 1832. He studied under prolific 19th century French painters François-Edouard Picot and William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
His paintings specialised in the idyllic depiction of the French bourgeois. The demand for his paintings of children, women and some genre scenes with mythological elements increased as the public grew more attracted to the softness and innocence of his delicately depicted figures.
Perrault regularly exhibited at the Salon and won medals in 1864, 1867 and 1878. He was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1887, meaning he no longer had to submit his work to jurors to enter the Salon.
