This finely detailed etching with aquatint by Lionello Balestrieri (1872-1958) depicts the German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) deep in thought at his desk. A copy of his opera 'Tannhäuser' lies upon the desk, whilst an expansive view of the city skyline is visible through the window. The work is signed in graphite to the lower right and numbered 88.
