Artist Biography

Robert Ball ARCA RBA RBSA RWA was a skilled painter, printmaker and teacher born in Birmingham. He is best known for his etchings and engravings based on life in Birmingham. This included images of industrial life, people at work, and portraits. An interest for Ball was, in particular, the image of the labourer prior to the invention of mechanisation. Examples of his etchings and paintings can be seen in The Victoria & Albert Museum, Cheltenham Art Gallery, The Ashmolean in Oxford, and The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. The largest collection of his prints is held in the Archives of the City of Birmingham University Department of Art and Design where he was both a student and a teacher.
