A very fine example of Victorian miniature portraiture, this watercolour shows a dark haired, bearded gentleman with piercing blue eyes, wearing a jacket and high collared shirt typical of the 1840s. The portrait is of a pretty graduated blue ground. The artist has used the traditional Georgian method of miniature portrait painting, favoring minuscule, almost dot like brush strokes to create a finely textured image. The artist shows great skill in a particularly small portrait with wonderfully crisp shadows and line work. The glint in the sitter's eyes has been subtly yet sharply rendered, adding huge amounts of character to the sitter.
The painting is unsigned and presented in an ebonised wooden frame with traditional brass acorn hanger and a small, glazed inner window. There are two labels at the back with minimal information about the sitter and his family.
On vellum.The painting is incredible condition with only very minor foxing which is almost unnoticeable until up very close. The frame has some scuffs and chips to the paint, mainly along the grain of the wood. The brass inner window has some tarnishing.
