Late 19th Century Traditional Newlyn School Oil - Shadowy Man
Description
A moody and atmospheric portrait of an old man with thick white beard wearing a black jacket. The artist has used a muted palette and heavy shadows to add a mysterious narrative to the portrait. The old man's eyes are shadowed, without highlight and the background seems to merge with his body.
The painting is unsigned on canvas laid over stretchers. There is a framer's stamp at the reverse from St Ives.
On canvas.Condition
The painting has heavy discolouration and some craquelure across the surface. There is an area of heavy bitumen deterioration running down the left hand stretcher. There are several repairs to the canvas, fully restored both front and back, the largest being at the lower left corner. There is general wear to the outer edges of the canvas, typical for its age.
