A fine eighteenth-century portrait of an aristocratic gentleman wearing a smart black coat, white cravat, and white waistcoat. This portrait was acquired as part of a pair; the other depicts his wife and is also listed (sw259). His waistcoat is embroidered with intricate foliate designs, matching the posy that adorns his wife's shawl. The work is well presented in a gilt oval frame with a beaded running pattern. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Overall, the condition is good, with good retention of colour. There is discolouration and craquelure, as is typical for a picture of this age. Impressions from the stretchers are visible. There are abrasions to the lower right, and scratches and cracking to the frame.
