Description

This evocative early 18th-century religious scene depicts Samson before the Philistines, his head shorn and his body bound in chains. Rendered in a Baroque style, it is imbued with heightened drama, dynamic composition, and a rich palette of vivid colours. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an antique gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. The artwork has undergone previous restoration: the canvas has been relined and areas of overpainting are visible under UV light. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs and small losses throughout. Some warping to the lower rail. Historic woodworm damage to the reverse: the wood has been fully treated and is pest free. Overall the frame is also in good condition for its age.
