The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and evidence of a previous mount. Some minor glue residue around the edges.

Etcher, mezzotinter and lithographer, born and educated in Philadelphia, USA. He studied at Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art 1878-80 where he specialised in architectural subjects. He travelled widely in Europe, illustrating books many of which he wrote himself. He became a close friend of fellow countryman and ex-patriot J.M. Whistler and wrote a life of the artist, in 1907. He was appointed the first President of the Senefelder Club and returned to America in 1914, dying in Brooklyn, New York twelve years later.
He exhibited in England at the FAS, RSA, RGI, NEAC and ISSPG. Although not a member of the Society of Mezzotint Engravers he was a fine practitioner of the art form. Examples of his work can be found at the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield, V&A, the Luxembourg Museum, Paris, Uffizi, Florence and in several galleries in Germany.
