Artist Biography

Born in 1947, John came to painting as an adult after a background in landscape garden design. Although he had always used drawing in his landscape design he never took any formal fine art training. By 1988 John realized that the ‘doodles’ of his imagination had taken over and he knew that the time had come to concentrate upon the development of his art.

He paints and draws naturally with his work imparting a quiet strength rather than wishing to startle or shock. John’s art crosses many frontiers for the thought behind it, touches many nationalities. His work was awarded the 1994 Daler Prize at the Royal Watercolour Society.

Scarland lives and works in West Sussex, and has works in collections in the USA, Australia, Germany, Portugal, France and the UK.
